SENSE AFRICA

The Earthfirst Series was photographed over a period of a year in intertidal and desert environments. The inspiration comes mostly from the land itself, and from the rock engravings left by our great San ancestors. Some of the artworks took over a week to create before the photographs could be taken, as often the elements and animals would destroy an unfinished piece during the nights. 'Earthfirst' is a concept that when we make a decision in life, we should consider the earth first before taking action. These artworks are designed to still the mind and to motivate people to honour our                 planet.

Carrion-eyed
cave dweller
inner relic
cast forth
to seethe
in sun-blessed
first earth-form

Freed
to bound
blood-nourished
gasping
in the
virgin
air

Somewhere on the fringes of our planet
there is a person waiting -
about to become an animal -
on the verge of stepping
into the presence of another feeling -
about to step
into the other place within our own -
about to experience
the stream of living and surviving
in its most basic form -
about to know what it's like only to think
from second to second -
from breath to breath -
living in the flow of the elements

Galleries away
a rock god
laughs
and the mighty topland
savours
the warmth
- wind carved
centuries ago

Geoart 4
On the tips of man's vision -
creatures moving like light
stalking his stone
searching for cracks
to teach him to mate
with the blood of a tree

Geoart 5
By the light of the flames, I see the hands beating,
On the waves of the wind, I hear the flesh striking,
In the wake of the Earth, I feel the pulse throbbing,
Through the tides of the air, I smell the sweat melting,
In the depth of my throat, I taste my heart burning

Hold your breath on windless nights,
and witness the splendour -
the subtle savagery of the sacred ceremony,
the song of the skull drums
beating, beating, beating to the rhythm
of all the wings of all the birds that ever flew

Geoart 6
Across the endless wastes of time
there drifts a flow
that knows no beginning or end -
a substance ungoverned by laws or forward motion -
a river that runs in all directions at the same time -
yet is still.

White stone
Sacred snare

Geoart 8
When the blood settles,
severed limbs have no mouths -
gaping wounds speak in silent gasps

No-one knows the essence of the sacrifice
'til the flesh rots away
and the blood runs green again

But you can always tell from the beauty
in the whiteness of bones,
if life was in the dying.
